Vinyl records are experiencing a real Renaissance for the time being. The CD times are already gone and vinyl records are cheering up the ears of the young and of the old – it became as a new trend. They’re used not only by DJs or collectors, but also by ordinary people who wish to have a sound of high quality / a focus at home.

I’m uploading some historical facts about vinyl records to get acquainted.

Charles Cros and Tom Edison invented a device which would not only fix but also recreate the sound at the same time, even if separately. Ch. Cros, who didn’t have any money to make his idea come true 1887 spring sent a job to a national science academy where he described a device under the name “Paleofonas”. Only in 8 months, when the author was pressingly requiring, the academics read this work, however, at that time Tim Edison already had his invented phonograph patented.

The first record of Edison’s created device sounded 1877 December 6 and took only 7 seconds. Later on various inventors were improving a phonograph. A little bit improved this phonograph was used until the end of 20th century 3 decade.

The inventors who were motivated by a successful phonograph invention were looking for even more perfect recording ways. Emil Berliner suggested recording the sound into zinc tin discs, covered by wax. A device which is reading such discs he named a gramophone. The diameter of the first records was just 6 centimeters and ringing time – 1 minute. When one was playing, one had to turn the dial the whole time. A gramophone helped to drive a phonograph only when a spring mechanism was applied with automatic speed regulation to turn the dial. More and more new companies, competing among themselves, were set up because of the blade success. Parlophones, zonophones, ultraphones, patephones and victoroles also appeared. 1907 Giljonas Kamsuleris, the worker of a company “Pate”, improved a gramophone – equipped its megaphone inside a gramophone. A gramophone became smaller, portable and beginned to be named a patephone. V.Biciunas in a book “Music records” states that “there’re some news that already in 1907-1908 the singing of Lithuanian chorus amateurs was being recorded”.  A father of Lithuanian opera Kipras Petrauskas sang the war records after the World War I.

The vinyl records were experiencing their millennium from 4th until 8th decade of the 20th century. In 1978 “Sony Walkman” headset, which was recreating the sound almost completely driven out “a vinyl” out of the market. Audiocassettes reached their popularity almost 1985. The first CDs also appeared at the same time. This medium to save music basically spread in 2000 and at the same year, however, a bit later a notorious “Napster” became very popular. It let the customers replace their MP3 files and not buy any usual records.

Now it’s possible to find various solutions where to use the records: small tables, clocks, wall decorations and various accessories for home are being made of them, however, this time I’ll overview the ways how and where to keep vinyl collection at home. I was trying to look for the examples where a patephone would associate with blades and I found indeed nice pictures.
